About the formats

MP4 and other videos

An MP4 or MOV from a phone or camera holds the picture and a sound track, usually AAC at 44.1 or 48 kHz. Converting keeps the sound track and drops the picture.

WAV – uncompressed PCM

WAV stores the decoded sound sample by sample, so every editor, DAW and transcription tool reads it and edits don't add another round of compression. A minute of 44.1 kHz stereo takes about 10.6 MB.

FLAC, MP3 and M4A

FLAC keeps the same sound at about half the size of WAV. MP3 and M4A are small files for listening. WAV and FLAC files can be up to 30 minutes long.

Why people convert MP4 to WAV

Edit the sound of a video

Clean up dialogue, cut a music video's track or mix a vlog's sound in Audacity, GarageBand, Logic or Premiere with a WAV that imports everywhere.

Samples and sound effects

Take a sound from a clip you filmed as WAV for a sampler, a beat or a sound effects library.

MP4 to WAV: frequently asked questions

How the converter works and what it can do.

How do I convert MP4 to WAV?

Choose one or more videos above, keep WAV selected, press Convert to WAV and download the result. It runs in your browser, with no upload and no queue.

What sample rate and bit depth does the WAV have?

16-bit PCM at the video's own sample rate, usually 44.1 or 48 kHz for phone and camera videos, with the same number of channels.

Is WAV better quality than the sound in the MP4?

It is the same sound, uncompressed. The WAV can't be better than the video's sound track, but editing it and exporting once avoids losing more quality.

Can I convert MOV, WEBM or MKV videos?

Yes. MOV from iPhones, WEBM from screen recorders and browsers, MKV, M4V and 3GP are converted the same way, up to 2 GB each.

Is there a length limit?

Each WAV can be up to 30 minutes long, because the result is held in your browser's memory. For longer videos choose MP3 or M4A, which have no length limit, or cut a part first.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. The sound is extracted inside your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg. Only the audio engine (about 31 MB) is downloaded, once; your videos never leave your device.

Can I paste a YouTube link?

No, only video files on your device are converted. To find out which song plays in a YouTube or TikTok video, paste the link into the AHA Music video song finder at aha-music.com/url.

Is it free?

Yes. It needs no account, adds no watermark and does not limit how many videos you convert.
