What the chord finder does
Piano and guitar
Enter a chord on a two-octave keyboard or on a guitar fretboard in standard tuning.
chord types
Major, minor, power chords, sus, diminished, augmented, sixths, sevenths, add9, ninths, elevenths and thirteenths.
Slash chords
When the lowest note isn't the root, you get the inversion as a slash chord, such as C/E.
Real voicings
Guitarists and pianists often leave out the fifth; those chords are still named, marked "no 5th".
Every reading
The same notes can be two chords (Am7 and C6); the bass picks the first, the others are listed.
Hear it
Play the chord back as a short strum to check it against what you hear.
Chord finder FAQ
Names, inversions and how the finder decides.
How do I find the name of a chord?
Press its notes on the piano or pick its frets on the guitar. The chord name appears immediately, with the intervals and any other names the same notes can have.
Does the order of the notes matter?
Only the lowest note does: it is the bass. C E G is C major; with E in the bass it is C/E, the first inversion.
What is a slash chord?
A chord with a bass note other than its root, written chord/bass: C/E is C major with E in the bass, G/B is G major with B in the bass.
Why do some chords have two names?
Some note sets are two chords: A C E G is Am7 and also C6. The finder puts first the reading whose root is in the bass and lists the other.
What does "no 5th" mean?
The fifth of the chord is missing. It adds little to the sound, so players often leave it out of sevenths and ninths; the chord keeps its name.
Which chord types does it know?
30 types: major, minor, 5, sus2, sus4, dim, aug, 6, m6, 7, maj7, m7, m7b5, dim7, m(maj7), 7sus4, 7#5, 7b5, add9, madd9, 9, maj9, m9, 6/9, 7b9, 7#9, 11, m11, 13 and maj13.
Can it find the chords of a song from audio?
Not from a recording. To work out a song, find its key with the key detector, then try chords from that key here.
Which guitar tuning does the fretboard use?
Standard tuning, E A D G B E from the low string, frets 0 to 12. Pick × for a string you don't play.
