How to record audio online

Three steps, all in your browser.

1. Allow the microphone

Choose Voice or Music, press the red button and allow the microphone when your browser asks. Pick another microphone if you have more than one.

2. Record

Talk, sing or play for up to 60 minutes. Pause and resume as often as you like; the level bar shows that the microphone hears you.

3. Trim and save

Press Stop, play it back, drag the handles to cut what you don't need and save it as MP3, WAV or M4A.

What this voice recorder can do

Voice mode and music mode

Voice mode reduces echo and background noise. Music mode turns that processing off, because it treats music as noise and would make a song or an instrument sound thin.

Pause, resume, choose the microphone

Stop between takes without starting a new file, and record from a USB microphone, a headset or the built-in one.

Silence cut automatically

Quiet seconds at the start and the end are left out of the selection; drag the handles to keep them or cut more, with a fade in and out if you want.

MP3, WAV or M4A

MP3 at 192 kbps plays everywhere, WAV is lossless for editing, and M4A (AAC) is the format of iPhone voice memos.

Private: nothing is uploaded

The recording is made and saved in your browser. No server receives it and nothing is stored, so close the tab and it is gone.

Find the song you recorded

Recorded a song playing nearby? Press Identify this song and the recording opens in the AHA Music song finder.

What people record

Voice memos, interviews and lectures

Capture a thought, an interview or a class on a laptop without installing anything, and keep it as a small MP3.

Singing and instrument practice

Use music mode to hear how your voice, guitar or piano really sounds, then save the best take as lossless WAV.

A song you want to identify

Record the music in a café, a car or on TV, cut the clearest part and send it to the song finder in one click.

Voice-overs and podcast takes

Record a narration or a podcast segment, trim the start and the end, and drop the file into your video or audio editor.

Online voice recorder: frequently asked questions

How recording works and what you can do with it.

How do I record my voice online?

Press the red button above and allow the microphone when your browser asks. Talk, then press Stop, play the recording back, trim it if you like and press Save to download it as MP3, WAV or M4A.

Is my recording uploaded or stored?

No. The audio is recorded and saved inside your browser; only the audio engine used for saving (about 31 MB) is downloaded, once. No server receives your recording and nothing is kept after you close the tab.

How long can I record?

Up to 60 minutes per recording. The recorder tells you 60 seconds before the end and then stops by itself, so nothing is lost; you can record again right after. Pauses don't count.

Which format should I save in?

MP3 (192 kbps) for sharing and playing anywhere, WAV for editing without any loss (up to 30 minutes), M4A (AAC) for iPhone and Apple apps.

What is the difference between Voice and Music?

Voice turns on the browser's echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic level, like a phone call. Music turns them off: they treat music as noise and cancel sound playing from the same device, so use Music for singing, instruments or a song you want to identify.

The browser doesn't let me use the microphone. What do I do?

Click the lock or microphone icon at the left of the address bar, set Microphone to Allow and press the button again. On a Mac also check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone; on Windows, Settings > Privacy > Microphone.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in Safari on iPhone and iPad and in Chrome on Android. Keep the page open and the screen on while recording: phones stop the microphone when the browser goes to the background.

Can I find out which song I recorded?

Yes. Use Music mode, record at least 10 seconds of the song, save, and press Identify this song: the recording opens in the AHA Music song finder without choosing the file again.
