Which noise it removes

RNNoise was trained to keep speech and remove everything else. This is what to expect.

How do I remove background noise from audio for free?

Open the recording on this page, choose a strength and press Remove noise. Listen to the result next to the original and download it. It is free, without an account, and the file is processed on your device.

Is this AI noise reduction?

Yes, in the plain sense: the noise is removed by RNNoise, a small recurrent neural network trained on thousands of hours of speech and noise. It runs in your browser instead of on a server, so nothing is uploaded.

Can I remove background noise from a video?

Yes. Open the video and keep Save as on Video: the sound is cleaned and put back under the same picture, which is copied without re-encoding. MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV and WEBM files up to 400 MB keep their picture; other videos are saved as audio.

Which strength should I use?

Full removes the most noise and suits hiss, fans and traffic. If the voice sounds thin or dry, try Medium or Light: they mix a little of the original back in, so the room sounds natural while the noise is much quieter.

Will it remove music or other voices?

No. The network keeps anything that sounds like speech, so other people talking stay. Music under a voice is reduced unevenly, and music on its own gets damaged. Use it for voice recordings.

Why does my voice sound different after cleaning?

Removing strong noise also removes some of the voice that shares its frequencies. Use Medium or Light strength, and record closer to the microphone next time: the less noise there is, the cleaner the result.

Is my recording uploaded or stored?

No. Decoding, cleaning and saving all happen in your browser. Nothing is sent to our servers, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

How long can the recording be?

Files up to 2 GB can be opened, and the first 20 minutes are cleaned. For a longer recording, cut it into parts with the audio trimmer first.
