How to identify a song from a screen recording
To find a song from a screen recording, upload the recording (MP4 or MOV, up to 2 GB) to AHA Music, move the slider to where the music plays and click Identify; you get the title and artist in seconds. Your browser extracts the audio first, so only the sound is uploaded. The same works for a voice memo recorded next to a speaker.
- Record the screen while the song plays, or save the video to your phone or computer.
- Choose the file above. MP4, MOV, M4A, MP3 and WAV all work, up to 2 GB.
- Drag the slider to a moment where the music is clear and click Identify.
- For a long recording with several songs, sign in and run Full File Scan to list each song it recognises with a timestamp.
Why a screen recording works
A screen recording keeps the audio exactly as the app played it, with no room noise in between. That is often a cleaner sample than holding a second phone up to the speaker, and it still works after the original post is deleted, made private or scrolled out of your feed.
It also solves the cases where a link cannot be scanned: stories that expire, private accounts, apps with no share link, games and video calls. If it played on your screen with sound, a recording of it can be identified.
Voice memos work the same way when they captured music from a speaker: a café, a car, a concert. A recording of you humming or singing is a different problem; the humming song finder handles that.
Which method works from a screen recording
| Method | Works |
|---|---|
| Upload the screen recording or voice memoThe method for this page. MP4, MOV, M4A, MP3, WAV and more, up to 2 GB. | Yes |
| Paste the post linkFaster when the video is public on a supported site; fails on private, deleted or expired posts. | Yes |
| Record with the microphoneWorks while the song is still playing near you, with more background noise. | Yes |
| Hum or sing the melodyUse the humming song finder; a voice recording of humming does not match here. | Yes |
When it fails, and what to do
- The recording has no sound.
- Some screen recorders capture video only. Turn on audio (internal or system sound) in the recorder and record again.
- Speech or sound effects cover the music.
- Move the slider to a moment where the song is clearest, or run Full File Scan to try the whole file.
- The music is original to the creator.
- A sound the creator made themselves has no released recording to match.
- The song is heavily sped up, slowed or remixed.
- Moderate tempo changes usually match; heavy edits can break the fingerprint. Try the cover song identifier for live and cover versions.
Questions about screen recordings and voice memos
Does my whole video get uploaded?
No. Your browser extracts and compresses the audio track first, so only the sound leaves your device.
Which file types work?
Video files such as MP4, MOV and WebM, and audio files such as M4A, MP3, WAV, AAC and FLAC, up to 2 GB.
How do I record the sound on an iPhone or Android screen recording?
On iPhone, a screen recording includes the sound the app plays, but some apps block it; play the recording back to check it has sound. On Android, choose a recorder setting that captures internal or media audio.
Can I find the song in a voice memo?
Yes, when the memo recorded music playing from a speaker. Upload it and pick the clearest moment. For a memo of you humming or singing, use the humming song finder.
Is it free?
Quick Identify on a file is free and needs no account. Full File Scan of a long recording needs a free account and uses daily scan time; the pricing page lists the current allowance.
